Hopper Windows – Their Prevalence in Mid-Rise and High-Rise Buildings

Hopper windows are generally hinged at the bottom and open inward, rather than opening by sliding or lifting as with conventional windows. These are energy efficient, durable and attractive and hence are used prominently in mid-rise and high-rise buildings here in the windy city. In fact, we’ve done a number of these window replacement and installation jobs right here, for both residential and commercial windows in Chicago.

Hopper windows are often combined with a fixed window either above or below, making this a key source of ventilation. A common architectural design in mid-rise and high-rise construction is to place these near the floor, with screens placed on the exterior of the unit. This gives flexible options for controlled airflow based on the occupant’s preference as they can be opened at different intervals, but without the problem of bugs and insects. Also, they offer good security as they are placed near the floor and so are not a risk for falling out of. They can also be used in small spaces and give you a great picture window experience!
